How Many Red Wiggler Worms Do I Need for My Bin?
The Honest Short Answer
It's the question every new worm keeper asks us, and the honest answer is: it depends on your bin and your kitchen — but two simple rules will land you in exactly the right place.
Rule 1: By the Size of Your Bin
Plan on about 1 pound of red wigglers for every square foot of bin surface. A standard home worm bin (about 2 feet by 2 feet of surface, once it's running full) can happily hold up to 4 pounds of worms — but you don't have to start there. Most folks start smaller and let the herd grow into the bin.
Rule 2: By Your Kitchen Scraps
Worms eat roughly half their own weight in scraps every day once they're settled in. So ask yourself: how much fruit and veggie waste does your household make? A pound of worms can keep up with about a half-pound of scraps a day — a typical family kitchen.
So Which Size Should You Order?
- Just curious, or a tiny countertop bin? Start with our ¼ lb (about 250 worms) – $25. Small, affordable, and a fine way to learn.
- A standard home bin for one or two people? The ½ lb (about 500 worms) – $50 is the classic starter size.
- A family kitchen — our most popular size! The 1 lb (about 1,000 worms) – $75. Truth be told, this is the size most of our customers choose, and there's a reason: it's a real working colony from day one, and the castings come noticeably faster.
- A big bin, a big garden, or lots of scraps? Step up to 1½ lbs (about 1,500 worms) – $125.
- Serious composting, market gardens, and farm rows: 2 lbs (about 2,000 worms) – $150 or 2.5 lbs (about 2,500 worms) – $250.
The Comforting Truth: Worms Multiply
Here's what takes the pressure off this decision: red wigglers multiply fast. A healthy bin's population can double in about 90 days, and the herd naturally grows to fit the food and space you give it. So there's no wrong door here — start with the size that fits your bin and your budget today, feed them well (see our guide on what red wiggler worms eat), and read how red wigglers multiply faster than you think. Your worms will do the rest.
